Australia is a very hot destination for the students of the overseas countries. Australian Government has released 14.7$ billion in 2009 for providing the highly sophisticated infrastructure to schools and various educational institutions. The government of this country is highly dedicated to provide world class educational methods to the future generations. The students who are seeking admission to the schools or colleges of Australia must obtain a student visa. Student visa permit you to stay in Australia as a temporary resident according to your course duration.

An applicant of a student visa will prove his eligibility in terms of personal, financial and academic substances. The capability to afford Airfares, tuition fees, accommodation, ability to support the dependent family members in the course of the studies etc are included in the financial eligibly of the applicant.

Proficiency in English language is an essential requirement for the students applying for the student visa. If English is your second language you should pass IELTS test for the visa purpose. Your previous history of immigration with Australia is an important element in the assessment. The candidates must pass the medical examination as per the guidelines of the DIAC. The students should obtain a medical insurance under Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) program before submitting the visa application. You can consult immigration and visa experts for conducting your eligibility assessment to decide the eligibility to apply for the Australian student visa.

Student visa can be issued under seven subclasses-Independent ELICOS,Schools sector, Vocational education and training (VET) sector, Higher education sector, Masters and Doctorate sector, Non-award foundation studies/other sector, and AusAID or Defense sponsored sector.

A five level assessment program for students made immigration process hassle free for the candidates. You can match your passport with the visa subclasses for identifying the assessment level. If any of your family members is accompanying you, then their assessment level is considered to be same as yours.

You can apply for a student visa Australia through the local Australian embassy or consulate located in your country. You will get response of your application with in 24 hours. You can access the visa details electronically at any time through the Visa Entitlement Verification Online System (VEVOS). You need to pay a non refundable application fee of 450$ for the application and processing of visa.

The citizens of Afghanistan, Pakistan or New Zealand should submit student visa application directly through the Adelaide Offshore Student Processing Centre (AOSPC) instead of the Australian High Commission in Islamabad.

International Students below the age of eighteen must have a local guardian in Australia. The Australian immigration is now granted permission to the students to work in the country not more than twenty hours in a week by using student visa. This permission was not applicable to the students who got visa before 26 April 2008. Such students can obtain a work permit after the commencement of the course. International students who are working under this scheme should obtain tax file number form the Australian Tax department.

Once the visa is granted, you should obey all the rules and regulations of the country during the course period. You must oblige some restrictions as per the terms and conditions of the visa–

* You must maintain the required attendance as part of the course. Weekly attendance reporting is made to the immigration department. If the attendance is below 80% unless you submit a medical report, the immigration may cancel your visa.
* You are not allowed to work for more than 20 hours in a week.
* You should not change the education provider in the first 12 months of the studies.
* You should inform your residential address to the education institution with in seven days of entering in Australia. The change of residence also should inform immediately to the concerned authorities.
* You can travel to various countries in the visa period.
* You cannot stay in Australia after the expiry of the visa period unless you apply for a renewal.

The students need to undergo very stringent assessments for avoiding the exploitations of the agents. The demand for the student visa is increasing every year. Australian government is very keen in maintaining the transparency of the processing and issue of student visas.

The first inhabitants of this vast continent are the aborigines, coming to the land some 40,000 to 50,000 years ago, and the scholars thought they may have crossed the land bridges from Southeast Asia. These people were mostly hunter-gatherers with a complex oral tradition and spiritual beliefs. The Aborigines were able to use and sustain the continent’s resources, concurring to stop hunting and gathering at certain times to give ample time to the resources and populations to flourish. It is believed that before the European settlement, as many as half a million to a million Aborigines lived peacefully. Today, an estimated 350,000 Aborigines are living on the continent.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Aboriginal culture is their belief of the Dreamtime or the sacred time of the world’s creation. Stories of the Dreamtime are depicted in bark painting and rock art as well as lyrical music, which are handed down from generation to generation and has remained intact for at least 50,000 years. Dances are also major feature of the Aboriginal culture and tradition portraying the creation myths as well as recent events of historical significance.

The Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch explorers have landed on the continent but it was not until the late 18th century that a European settlement really started with the arrival of settlers and prisoners from Great Britain. Australia was a penal colony of the British Empire until the system was abolished around the mid-1800. The former prisoners and other pioneers founded six colonies and these are New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland.

The colonial past of this land has inspired the Australian affinity for social equality, for justice and liberty, and for the will to survive in new and largely unfamiliar lands and situations very much like the pioneers of the land.

During the gold rush of the 1850s, immigrants from all over the world, such as Europe, North America and China, traveled to Australia in search for the gold and the riches buried beneath the red sands of this vast continent. These immigrants brought with them their unique culture to merge with the flourishing culture of the settlers and the long-standing Aboriginal tradition. However, this period of prosperity was short-lived and the 1890s was a time of financial recession.

After the Second World War, Australia promoted immigration from Europe and later on, immigrants from Asia and elsewhere begun coming in and building new lives in the Land Down Under. Once again, Australia experienced another cultural transformation. From then on, this vast arid land has undergone so many transformations and Australia is now one of the highly industrialized countries in the world.

Another distinct feature of the Australians is their sheer love for sports. There are more than 120 national sports organizations and thousands of state, regional and even local sports associations. Australian athletes have proven time and time again in international sports competitions that they can step up to the challenge. Football, cricket, and water sports are just some of the favorite sports of the Aussies. Since most of the populations are living within easy access of the coast and the sea, it is not surprising that the beach and the water is a central part of the Australian lifestyle.

As a steady stream of immigrants arrive, the multiculturalism of Australia is further defined with more than 20 percent of the population being foreign born and another 40 percent are of diverse cultural background. Most Australians are multilingual, speaking a second or third language after English, the most popular of these being Cantonese, Greek, Italian, and Arabic.

Australia has indeed come a long way from the land it was in the 18th century. Today, it is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world by blending the past with the present and forging an enduring future for the next generations of Aussies.

It pays to know how much higher education costs abroad when you are considering a semester or year of college overseas in Australia or New Zealand. Just like attending college or university in the United States or Canada, New Zealand and Australian college costs will include tuition, books and living expenses, but there are a few additional costs that are special to study abroad programs of which you will want to be aware.

As in the United States or Canada, the tuition that you will pay for a study abroad in Australia or New Zealand program will vary by university and the program you will study. In general, a bachelors degree in Australia or New Zealand will run from $11,000 to $23,000 in United States dollars, depending on the area of study selected. Specialized degrees such as a Bachelors degree in Veterinary Science will cost from $19,000 to $40,000, while a law degree will average from $17,500 to $36,000. Masters degrees, as is the case in the United States and Canada, are more expensive, ranging from $13,000 to $27,000 for the two years course of study, with an additional two years of PhD level study costing between $2,500 to $25,000. A medical degree from Australia or New Zealand can average anywhere from $35,000 to $50,000, whereas an MBA comes at a cost of $17,000 to $50,000.

There are other costs involved with college in Australia or New Zealand that you would not ordinarily have at a home college or university. Prominent in this category is the student visa. The student visa allows you to legally study in the foreign country, and may also allow other privileges such as working in the host country and access to health care, but this varies by country. Student visas are less expensive for New Zealand than Australia, with the Kiwi visa available from zero to $170 United States dollars, and the Australian visa ranging from $450 to $515. The good news is that with a student visa in Australia or New Zealand, you are allowed to work up to twenty hours per week during the academic year and can even work full time during breaks between semesters, to help defray costs.

Other ordinary costs for books and living expenses should be added in when you consider the cost of study abroad new zealand, according to a 2007 cost comparison, was the least expensive country for student living expenses, coming in at $8,958 United States dollars per academic year. Students studying in Australia can expect to pay $11,322 annually, while American students pay the most at $12,362 per year. If you plan on additional travel or take part in entertainment, you will want to allocate additional funds for this purpose. Books in both countries range approximately $500 per year. Roundtrip airfare will run around $2,000.

For additional help in finding funding for your study abroad in Australia or New Zealand, contact your college financial aid office.

Studying abroad provides a vast amount of opportunities and new experiences. This is especially the case for students enrolled in a New Zealand or Australia degree program. Not only can students immerse themselves in a new culture, but also they have the freedom to do it while pursuing an engaging program of studies.

Why earn a degree in Australia or New Zealand?

Further, some universities even offer programs unique to these countries. Whatever your academic or career goals, specialized or mainstream, there are many opportunities to achieve them. Working toward a degree in New Zealand or Australia enables students to select the ideal program of studies for their needs while enjoying the welcoming culture of their host country.

Career goals should be the first priority in identifying which degree in Australia or New Zealand to select. From this point, it is a good idea to compare the many Australia and New Zealand degree programs available for the desired field of study. Beyond the courses available within a program, some practical considerations should be taken into account for this comparison. These include the university’s location, average class size, cost of the Australia or New Zealand degree program and its duration, to name a few.

Overall, there are many benefits to pursuing a degree in Australia or New Zealand. Students can select from a number programs to find the ideal degree to meet their academic and career goals. Additionally, degrees can often be completed in less time than in North America. Students can make the most of the opportunity to study abroad by enrolling in an Australia or New Zealand degree program.

Australia is a student’s delight with its attractive environment and amazing activities. Before you plan your journey you must meet certain norms and criteria.
* A full ten year valid passport is needed with at least six months of validity after your scheduled return trip from Australia.
* A valid student visa should be issued to you from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship. You can apply for the visa through your nearest Australian High Commission/ Consulate.
* You must remember that Australian Student visa is divided into multiple categories with ‘main course of study’ and ‘nationality’ as the primary criteria.
* A full-time course acceptance certificate from an Australian educational institution is necessary before initiating the student visa application process.

Travelling Expenses

Australia has an advanced tourism industry that caters to the needs of the rich and middle class segments. Fortunately, Australia is an amazing destination for even small budget travelers, such as students.

It is difficult to fix a certain sum for a particular trip to Australia. On an average, a minimum of Aus. $ 250 to Aus. $300 is needed for a single day stay, which includes accommodation. In Australia, the currency is the Australian Dollar. Foreign currencies are exchanged at banks, international airports and hotels. 10% service tax is levied on all goods and products. Credit cards from American Express, Visa, JCB and its affiliates are commonly accepted.

Buying Cheap Air Tickets

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world and most major airlines fly to its multiple cities. Air tickets must be booked after receiving a valid visa and after organizing important documents.
Cheap Air tickets can easily be booked. With the expansion of ‘open sky policy’ almost everywhere, markets are very competitive. Websites of leading airlines may be checked for a comparatively cheap air ticket and the ticket can be booked through credit/debit cards, online. Alternatively, one may get a good deal with the promotional discount air

tickets offered by airlines at regular intervals, especially during festive seasons.
On arriving in Australia, be ready to show your valid passport and Incoming Passenger Card. Tinned or packaged food and also plant and animal material should be declared. Illicit drugs are banned and illegal. Persons carrying cash, travelers check, ‘monetary instruments’ of $A10 000 or more in foreign currency must make a declaration with the Custom authorities.

Medicines carried while traveling must be declared so as to ensure they are not banned by the Australian government. It is advisable to carry personal health records and proper medical prescriptions assigned by a qualified medical practitioner along with medicines. Carrying prescribed medicine and prescriptions not for your personal use, or for someone traveling with you is illegal.
Alternate Modes of Travelv
Air travel remains the most preferred choice of travel for most travellers from India to Australia. However, attractive tour packages in luxury liners are also offered by well known tour operators such as Cox & Kings.

Once in Australia, its wide air coverage will fly you to different cities of your choice with ease. For a more enjoyable trip, one may travel by high speed rail or road. Australian roads are well known all over.

Plan Your Journey Well

A journey needs to be planned well in advance. It is more important in the context of foreign tours as it involves possession of valid passports and receiving valid visa well in advance of the departure date.

One also should get accustomed to the basic immigration and custom norms, along with living conditions in the destination country beforehand, to make the trip pleasurable and exciting.
Visas and passports should be applied for well in advance, so as to avoid any last minute cancellations and delays.

Check this list before you leave (documents, currency, other important items, contact information)

Checklist before your leave

As a preventive measure, it is important to get all your important documents thoroughly checked. A valid passport, traveller’s check, visa and other entry documents, educational certificates and other necessary documents should be carried along to avoid any delays and cancellation.

Financial documents and immigration documents should be awarded top most priority. You must pay attention to your university and other educational documents. Copies of visa, credit card numbers, insurance policies and passport should be carried along and back-up copies, including that of the itinerary, should be left at home with an immediate family member.

Acclimatizing yourself with the new weather conditions
Icy, sloped mountains, lush rainforest’s, cool lagoons and surreal beaches can make you imagine the climatic conditions prevalent in Australia.

Climatic conditions in Australia are unique and enable you to enjoy your trip to the hilt.

Summers are warm and sunny, and spread from December to February.

It is usually a good time to enjoy sun bathing and or go for a swim at a nearby beach.

Winters are spread from June to August with snowfall on the Southern mountains.

The Northern states are temperate at 24° C generally.

Buying suitable clothes

With variations in temperatures all around Australia, it is advisable to purchase extra warm and warm clothes, along with leather gloves. Light tee-shirts and sun hats may be worn to avoid the strong Sun which can be damaging.

A prospective traveler may look for prior information, relating to climatic condition through the web. Accordingly, suitable clothing gear may be brought.

Travel Insurance

To avoid unpleasant situations arising out of sickness, injury, theft or accident, it is relatively safe to be adequately insured before traveling to a foreign destination.

Travel Insurance provides a person with protection cover in case of cancellation of travel plans arising due to accident, injury or illness. A local insurer will guide you best whether to opt for domestic travel insurance or international travel insurance, in consideration with your unique needs.
Travel insurance plans are available on the web. However, only a few insurers provide a wide array of travel insurance plans.

Medical and General Insurance for Studying Abroad

Medical insurance covers both, domestic medical and international medical insurances. An international medical insurance may suit one’s short or long-term international medical concerns, depending upon your need (such as the extent of single/multiple plan trips for individuals or families). Generally, international medical insurance covers emergency medical expenses, hospital stays and major surgeries.

For select foreign universities, it is mandatory for students to buy medical and health insurance. Maximum insurance covers for Indian students abroad come from accident and health ailments, followed by pregnancy.

The first humans are believed to have arrived in Australia over 40,000 years ago. These people arrived via land-bridges and/or sea crossings from Southeast Asia, and became the indigenous people known as “aborigines”. An additional and distinct group of early settlers, ethnically Melanesian, settled in the Torres Strait Islands (the Strait between Australia and Papua New Guinea) and the far North of Queensland.

Europeans first began to reach the area at the beginning of the 17th century. The first undisputed sighting of the Australian mainland was by the Dutch sea captain, William Janszoon in 1606. The Dutch are known to have chartered the western and northern shorelines of the continent during the 17th century, but made no attempt at settlement of what they called at the time “New Holland”. In 1770, British navigator, James Cook mapped parts of the East coast of Australia: the region today known as New South Wales. Cook claimed the area for Great Britain.

The first British colony was established in New South Wales on January 26th, a day that is now remembered as “Australia Day”. The British formerly claimed the western portions of Australia in 1859, and during the 19th century a whole series of separate British colonies were established around the continent. Much of this British colonization was based upon the transportation of convicts to penal colonies, and it was only in 1848 that the transportation of convicts to New South Wales stopped.

The arrival of Europeans had a drastic effect on the indigenous aboriginal population. This fell dramaticly from a high of 350,000 due to the infectious diseases, forced resettlements, and other factors. Indeed, although the issues remain highly controversial and disputed, some historians have characterized the events of the period as genocide.

In 1850s, the European population increased further thanks to a gold rush, and between 1855 and 1890, each of the six British colonies was separately granted responsible government – while the the colonies were autonomous in their internal affairs, they Britain retained control of foreign affairs and defense. In 1901, the six colonies were united in a federation known as the Commonwealth of Australia.

Australia participated in both World War I and World War II as part of the British Empire. To many Australians the events of the world wars, especially the Gallipoli campaign in World War I, and the Kokoda Track Campaign in World War II, were important milestones in Australia’s path to independent nationhood.

Legally, Australia first moved towards independence from Britain with the Statue of Westminister in 1931 (although Australia did not ratify it until 1942, but then back dated its effect to 1939), which granted effective independence in most matters. Australia however did retain some constitutional ties with Britain for another 40 years, these only finally be severed with the passing of the Australia Act in 1986. It should be noted that the British Queen Elizabeth II is also Queen of Australia, and a 1999 national referendum rejected becoming a republic.

Nowadays there is huge demand for TEFL and TESOL certified teachers around the world owing to vast usage of English as a second language. The TEFL qualification can get you an English teaching job in non-native English-speaking countries like China, Japan, Mexico and United Arab Emirates. The TEFL certification is the easiest way to start a new life overseas; TEFL is also a great option for travelers looking forward to earning money on their trips abroad. The TEFL certification is offered across the Australia in Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney. However if you aim to teach English to immigrant students in Australia, USA or New Zealand then you may be required to possess a TESOL certification. TESOL certification is provided by Australia and USA. Those who have a TESOL certificate enjoy an edge above the TEFL certified teacher as the former imparts a better technical knowledge.

Now after going through the reasons as to why you need to acquire the certifications a major question that comes to the mind is where to does one get the TEFL or TESOL certifications? As already mentioned the certifications are offered by Australia and USA but one can also get the certifications online. Many websites offer resources to find a comprehensive course to train students for teaching English in non-native English-speaking countries. The online courses can be completed in one to six months depending upon the student and the sites also boast placing its students abroad. Acquiring an online TEFL or TESOL Certification will be an added value to a person’s profile as compared to the non-certified teacher courses, owing to the reason that certification is becoming the standard requirement when applying for an esl job. There are a few websites that offer online certification for $295.00 that have excellent material quality consisting of 140+ pages, and constant touch with its certified students working abroad and good classroom modular programs.

There is a general misconception among the students that TESOL and TEFL certification courses are really tough to master. These two certifications can be easily achieved by a person who is willing to speak English and can be confident in delivering their knowledge in front of thirty eager to learn individuals. As a matter of fact, TEFL requires no prerequisite and the course itself starts from a basic knowledge of grammar, and the curriculum is designed so that by the end of the course the student is comfortable in English speaking and writing. The certifications of TESOL and TEFL are signed by the IATQUO (International Association of TESOL Qualifying Organizations) making it accountable worldwide.

The IATQUO certifies that the course undertaken meets the basic British criteria of 100+ hours of classroom time and 6+ hours of practical teaching practice. So if you want to teach English as a foreign language then becoming certified in TEFL and/or TESOL is a must.
